Reed Making Class 3

We continued the process of tying a piece of shaped cane to the staple with emphasis on the side slip. As well, scraping through the tip and making sure to begin the definition of the tip at 66 - 67 mm. This leaves a margin of error that can be helpful as a beginning reed maker.

A very important part of reed making is keeping the quadrants as similar as possible.

In Music Theory we studied Modes. There are 7 Modes: Ionain, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian & Locrian.

We listened to examples of music written in Modes such as Ottorino Respighi’s Piano Concerto in “Modo Misolidio” the Mixolydian Mode. We also listened to several examples of movie music written in modes. Yoda’s Theme sounds unique as it begins in the Lydian mode with a raised 4th.

We played three four part Canons. Two were written in modes. And for fun, we transposed some of our familiar etudes into modes.

Reed Making Class 2

Each student brought a tied reed to class! 👏

We reviewed the importance of having the sides of the reed seel and keeping the cane straight while tying. We also talked about the side slip. It is a technique in reed making that is best incorporated aside tying a straight reed.

The next step is scraping the reed evenly with all quadrents looking the same.

Our theory today was about the Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn. 1732-1809

He is known as the “Father of the Symphony”. He wrote an Oboe concerto in C major. He was very impressed by the young composer Mozart. Haydn influenced Mozart’s Concerto in C for Oboe.
We also played the Beethoven Trio and discussed the best way to rehearse an ensemble using the score with one student coaching.

Reed Making & Music Theory

We have held our first of four reed making classes. Though it can seem overwhelming, please keep tying those oboe reeds!

Review of what we learned:

  • What tools we would be working with and being careful with a very sharp blade

  • How to wind and tie a gouged and shaped piece of cane onto a staple

  • How to hold the knife and use the thumb to guide the blade

  • Basic scrape on a blank reed - a two lane road with a median

  • The description of the sections of a reed

    Tip, Heart, Spine, Windows, Rails

Music Theory:

  • Circle of 5ths

A review video is posted on our YouTube channel.
